ABOUT DESSY

As a multi-award winning vocalist and musician, Dessy Dobreva is well-known throughout Bulgaria, where she has anchored her own television show and participated in the highest rated program on Bulgarian TV, “Slavi’s Show”. She has performed in front of audiences exceeding 50,000 people, including such high profile events as the Easter Concert (2003), and the New Years Concerts (2002 and 2003) at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. During her three year tenure as the lead singer of Ku-Ku Band and “Slavi’s Show”, she sang along with such stars as Manhattan Transfer, Dream Theater, David Coverdale, BOND, Incognito, to name a few. Among the guests on the show were also the likes of Jean-Claude Van Dame, Former Russian President, Mikhail Gorbachev (whom Dessy brought to tears with her rendition of an old Russian song!), Ray Liotta, Stephen Baldwin, Tony Palmer (Sony Music), and Bob Miller (Governor of Nevada, USA). She has performed at Royal Albert Hall (London, UK), Astoria Hall (London, UK), The Blue Note (New York, USA).

Dobreva studied classical piano as a child but grew up loving Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Stevie Wonder, as well as Bach. Even after winning fame as a teenager, she wanted to push herself further musically and enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating in 2006 in Voice Performance. During her two years at Berklee, Dessy received heaps of awards as a songwriter and a performer, the most outstanding of which are Top song for December’ 05 at Indie 104 iRADIO LA, two Honors from The Billboard World Song Contest, USA, and an Honor from The Great American Song Contest. Dessy has two more degrees – Master in Jazz & Pop Vocals, and Bachelor in Music Theory, from the State Musical Academy “Pancho Vladigerov” in Sofia, Bulgaria.

In October 2008 was released Dessy’s first solo project, called “It’s HER!”, produced entirely by her. The record is a unique variety of ethnic, pop, R&B, jazz and Bulgarian folklore arrangements, and was issued in 50 000 copies for Bulgaria.

In March 2009 Dessy won the award of Fan TV, voted online by fans, for Performer Of The Year (2008). At the same time Dessy was invited to join the elections for the European Parliament as a candidate of NMSS party, a member of ELDR party in Europe. She was named the “lucky charm” of the party.

In June 2009 Dessy won the Grand-Prize of Kemer’s first international singers contest “Kemervision”, part of the 6th Culture Festival “The Golden Pomegranate” in Kemer, Antalya, Turkey.

In her social life, Dessy is proud to be one of Unicef’s “friends” around the world, helping to raise over 1 350 000 USD for the benefit of children with disabilities from the Mogilino institution. Dessy also supports charity campaigns such as The Avon Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer and The Bulgarian Christmas, a charity initiative which raises funds for the medical treatment of Bulgarian children, supported by the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, George Parvanov.
