Nikola Gaidarov (shepherd’s flute) is one of the top kaval players out
of Bulgaria and is a 3rd generation folk musician from Kazanluk in the
Rose Valley. He represents the new generation of folk musicians,
creating his own high energy style of playing and yet he is plays
entirely within tradition. He is a graduate of the Kotel Music School
and the Plovdiv Academy and currently resides in Chicago.
He will be playing Bulgarian folk music for dancing and listening with
Nikolay Kolev and Cherven Traktor for this special Balkan Cafe at the
East Village Restaurant.

Nikolay Kolev-gadulka (bowed rebec), Donka Koleva-vocals
–Nikolay and Donka were trained at the well known folk music school in Shiroka Luka in Bulgaria and have toured world-wide. They are both recognized as world class masters of their art. They have made several tours of the US with the group Kabile as well as with their own family orchestra.
Belle Birchfield, tambura (long-necked lute)
–Belle has studied tambura with Nikolay Kolev, Todor Kortelev, and Stoyan Kostov. She also plays baritone horn with Zlatne Uste Balkan Brass Band.
Michael Ginsburg – tarambuka (dumbek) and tapan (two-sided bass drum)
–Michael is the leader of Zlatne Uste Balkan Brass Band. He is also a well known Balkan dance teacher and has given workshops around the US and Canada, and in Germany, Austria, Macedonia, Japan, Israel and Brazil.
